Am MONTAG, 15. Juni 2026 um 13 Uhr wird Roberto Cattaneo, PhD, Mayo Clinic, USA, einen Vortrag mit dem Titel „Lethal measles virus spread in the brain: selection of mutant populations relocating viral proteins to neurites and recalibrating cell fusion“ halten.
The Cattaneo group seeks to understand how viruses interact with their hosts and cause disease. We characterized how measles virus enters immune cells by using a specific receptor, then causes immunosuppression by massively replicating in lymphatic organs. We identified another cellular protein expressed in the upper airways‘ epithelium that accounts for efficient host exit, explaining why measles virus is so contagious. Current research focuses on the mechanisms supporting cell-associated measles virus transfer to the brain, and subsequent genetic adaptation resulting in a rare but always lethal disease, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.
