Broadly neutralising antibodies against hepatitis C viruses characterised

Almost a year ago, RESIST researcher Prof. Pietschmann from the Twincore Institute for Experimental Virology and his team developed a test system that can be used to precisely measure the immune response against the broad spectrum of hepatitis C viruses (HCV). With the help of this test system, it has now been possible to isolate HCV antibodies in a study that attack an unusually large number of viral variants simultaneously - so-called broadly neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies reveal where the virus is particularly sensitive, which is another step on the way to developing a hepatitis C vaccine. The study, in [...]

RESIST researchers lead COFONI projects

The COVID-19 Research Network Lower Saxony (COFONI) is funding 13 projects with a total of around 6 million euros. Six of these projects are led by scientists who also conduct research in RESIST. The projects are funded with up to 500,000 euros each. In addition, RESIST researchers are also involved in four other projects. The six projects focus on research into active substances against SARS-CoV-2 and on the causes and long-term consequences of COVID-19 disease: The project Activity of human broadly neutralizing antibodies in a SARS-CoV-2 primate model is coordinated by RESIST spokesperson Prof. Schulz, and applicants include RESIST [...]

RESIST mourns the loss of Prof. Reinhold E. Schmidt

The RESIST team mourns the loss of Prof. Reinhold E. Schmidt, who died on 23 January 2022 at the age of 70. Prof. Schmidt was Dean of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) and for many years Director of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at Hannover Medical School (MHH). Prof. Schmidt helped to establish the Cluster of Excellence RESIST and has been a member of the Research Management Board and the Internal Advisory Board from the very beginning. He also conducted research in the RESIST project A2, which revolves around congenital immunodeficiency and whose goal is to [...]

Women in research

The cover story on women in research in the magazine of the Hannover Medical School (MHH Info) naturally includes RESIST researchers. Prof. Routier - "The polyglot biochemist" - is portrayed as representative of the RESIST female scientists: "Getting a good position in academia is difficult for all researchers, not only in Germany," says Prof. Dr. Françoise Routier, group leader at the MHH Institute of Clinical Biochemistry. "You have to carry out excellent research, be lucky, get political support and work a lot – without the salary outweighing the amount of work." This is likely why many young people would [...]

Kay Grünewald appointed new Scientific Director of CSSB

Prof. Dr. Kay Grünewald from the Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI) and the Department of Chemistry at the Universität Hamburg is the new scientific director of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) as of the beginning of 2022. On 3 December 2021, the CSSB Council confirmed the CSSB Directorates election of RESIST researcher Prof. Grünewald for a two-year term. Here you can read the corresponding press release of the CSSB. Corona pandemic: Prof. Falk and Prof. Meyer-Hermann are members of the expert council

In order to effectively combat the corona pandemic, the German government has set up a scientific expert council to advise it on the basis of current scientific findings on the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. Prof. Falk (MHH) and Prof. Meyer-Hermann (HZI) are also members of this 19-member panel. Prof. Dr. Christine Falk, member of the RESIST Internal Advisory Board, is President of the German Society for Immunology. She heads the Institute for Transplantation Immunology at the Hannover Medical School (MHH). RESIST researcher Prof. Dr. Michael Meyer-Hermann is a physicist and heads the HZI department "Systems Immunology" at the [...]

Influential RESIST researchers

Prof. Dr. Michael Manns, Prof. Dr. Alice McHardy and Prof. Dr. Thomas Werfel are among the most cited scientists in the world. This was the result of the evaluation "Highly Cited Researchers 2021" by the US company Clarivate Analytics. The three RESIST members are listed in the "Cross-Field" category, which includes researchers who have an impact on science beyond their actual field of work. Prof. Manns, as president of the MHH, has an advisory role on the RESIST board, Prof. McHardy, head of the HZI Department of Bioinformatics of Infection Research, and Prof. Werfel, deputy director of the MHH [...]

The third dose

The third vaccination – is it really necessary to be protected against Corona? Who should get vaccinated? In this interview, Prof. Schulz answers questions about the third vaccination as protection against Corona. Prof. Schulz, do we need a third vaccination? And if so, for whom and when? Yes. In principle, for everyone whose second vaccination is more than six months ago. And, this is not surprising; some other vaccines also have to be administered three times to achieve good protection. Hopefully this will increase the immune response and protection against infection with, and illness from, SARS-CoV-2. Who should definitely [...]

Success in the analysis of herpes viruses

A team around RESIST researcher Prof. Krey from the University of Lübeck, MHH and CSSB Hamburg has found a possible new starting point for the therapy of diseases triggered by herpes viruses. This can be the case in particular with immunocompromised patients as a result of organ transplants or HIV infections. They have now been able to publish their results in the scientific journal PLOS Biology. The starting point of the research is the icosahedral capsid, a small capsule regularly constructed from viral proteins, in which the DNA genome of the virus is packed for protection against environmental influences. [...]
