Corona research: What can the top five do?

Team investigates approaches for new drugs that act against many different coronaviruses: Finding active agents against SARS-CoV-2 and, if possible, against other coronaviruses - this is the goal that a team led by RESIST-Speaker Prof. Schulz, Institute of Virology at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and coordinator of two research areas at the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF), has been pursuing since the virus first appeared. Together with a team led by Professor Dr John Ziebuhr, Institute of Medical Virology at Justus Liebig University Giessen, it is now funded by the DZIF with around 440,000 euros. So far, [...]

A step on the way to better therapies against viruses

Researchers show how a cell protein of the innate immune response prevents the multiplication of herpes viruses: Most body cells can defend themselves against viruses after they have been activated by the body's own messenger substances (interferons). This happens with the help of proteins that recognise invading virus components and interfere with virus replication. One of these proteins is the myxovirus resistance protein B (MxB). It can inhibit many viruses, for example HIV and herpes viruses. But until now it was not clear how it does this. Now a team led by Dr Manutea Serrero and Professor Dr Beate [...]

New module successfully established

In bioscientific and clinical research, more and more larger and more complex data sets have to be analysed - partly due to the increasing use of omics technologies. In order to teach students in the three MHH bioscience Master's programmes, which include the Master's programme in Biomedical Data Science, the statistical and analytical methods needed for the correct scientific evaluation and assessment of such omics datasets, lecturers from various MHH institutes* launched the inter-programme module "Biostatistics, Omics Techniques and Big Data" in 2019. The module received funding of 340,000 euros for the three-year establishment phase as part of the [...]

Nutrients instead of antibiotics

Can nutritional supplements prevent serious diseases in newborns? BMBF supports project of MHH, RESIST and UKW with 1.9 million euros: Blood poisoning (sepsis) is life-threatening - especially for premature babies, as they can die from it within a few hours. In them, blood poisoning can also be the cause of years of increased susceptibility to other diseases. Since it is currently difficult to estimate which baby will actually develop sepsis, most of the premature babies (up to 85 percent) receive antibiotics as a precaution. These drugs can thus save lives, but they also have disadvantages such as the spread [...]

Cystic fibrosis and new therapeutic targets

From 21 June at 6 p.m., the lecture (in german language) by Professor Dr. Burkhard Tümmler, which he is giving as part of the Hannover Medical School's Patient University, can be viewed online. It revolves around the topic "Cystic fibrosis and new therapy goals". In 1980, chronically ill children with cystic fibrosis in Germany were still only nine years old on average. But there has been enormous progress since then. Take a look for yourself. More info: Research on lung diseases

Intestinal bacteria and rheumatological diseases

What role do intestinal bacteria play in the development of rheumatological diseases? This exciting question is the subject of the online lecture (in german language) by RESIST researcher Prof. Dr. Torsten Witte entitled "Infections and rheumatic diseases", which can be viewed from May 24 at 6 p.m. as part of the MHH Patient University. The entire program of the Patients' University can be found on the Patients' University homepage. More information on this topic can be found here.

Excursion to Luxembourg

The Master's programme "Biomedical Data Science" visited the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) from 27 to 29 April - a text by Dr Adrian Schulz: On Wednesday morning, 27.04.2022, a group of students from the Master's programme "Biomedical Data Science" of the MHH gathered at the main train station in Hannover full of anticipation. Finally, the excursion to the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), sponsored by the Joachim Herz Foundation, was about to begin. But first, the train journey of around 8 hours had to be made as entertaining as possible. The students of the online-based Master's [...]

First HAGIS-Symposium in Glasgow

For the first time, researchers of the German-Scottish project "Hannover-Glasgow Infection Strategy" (HAGIS) met in person for a symposium. Ten RESIST scientists travelled to Glasgow for two days on 28 April to the Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR). RESIST spokesperson Prof. Thomas Schulz and Dr. Joe Grove spoke the introductory words, gave an overview of the project and reported on the current status. The group then delved into discussions already underway, for example on strategies for further funding of the project, and exchanged views on exchange agreements. In terms of content, the participants discussed possible collaborations on the [...]
